My answers to Chrityotwisty's May questions: gopher://sdf.org/0/users/christyotwisty/phlog/2026-05-5Q.txt 1. How did April end for you: with a bang? or with a whimper? April, for my wife and I, was a stressful month. We are currently being sued by our neighbor over a groundwater problem that she caused due to her negligence (she failed to clean out her drain which caused water to back up in our yard, now excess of that is going onto the surface of her yard and she blames us). On top of all that she claims damages in excess of $60k. This has no affect on her home, this is down a hill and she claims she needs to buy a new shed. A shed is maybe $5k? Plus her shed is fine because I've installed a sump pump and we're pumping all of the excess water up the hill and into the downspout next to our house. Something we totally shouldn't have to do.I should add this pump had been in place long before the lawsuit. This didn't all start in April, this is just backstory. We had a lawyer who after a time started totally ghosting us. He would not respond to phone calls or emails. There was some other clues to indicate he might be trying to pull some scam in "cahoots" with our neighbor's lawyer. My wife did a lot of research and discovered that what we should have done was open a claim with our homeowner's insurance. We now did that and they secured a lawyer to defend us and April was all about this new lawyer taking over the case. Old lawyer didn't do jack squat. He has zero "discovery" to turn over to new lawyer even though the discovery deadline was only a few days away. Anyway I don't want to get into all the details but April was super stressful. We are planning on moving out of this neighborhood, out of this city, out of this state, would move out of this country and off this planet if we could. We visited where we want to move to and that was nice. A nice breather from living next to someone who is trying to ruin your life and take you for all your worth (and then some). 2. What's a website that was legendary a long time ago but is now "a ghost town?" Hmm well Yahoo, I guess. Back in the early days of the web Yahoo was a curated index of interesting web sites. Now the site still exists but all you see on it is regurgitated news. I really don't see how Yahoo is still a thing as they're not really providing anyone with anything that anyone wants. I think Yahoo should go back to their roots. Even though the web is massive and they couldn't hope to have a curated list of all of it, it doesn't feel as big as it used to because ... well probably because of the basis to this question: A lot of sites that used to be thriving communities are ghost towns, 404's, or everyone's moved on to a small set of "platforms". There's still a need for curated indexes of interesting and informative web sites. Actually there's more of a need now than ever before. 3. What extinct website(s) are you grateful the Internet Wayback Machine archived? There's so many. One was one of my own as the host for it got hacked and my content erased, and my local copies long since lost to a HDD crash. It's not a site I care too much for, not making money off it or anything but it's been around since the early 2000's and I'm kind of proud of the fact that I've been able to keep it in existance for so long. Besides that, geocities. Except I have not been able to find a site my mom had set up on geocities back in the day when she was trying to start a home- based online retail business. It never took off but I'd like to see an archive of that site anyway. 4. Do you ever have days when you are certain none of the eight-plus billion people on the planet have made as many errors that day as you have? I'm sure my errors can be unique but I don't think I've ever made an error as big as voting for Trump and one third of the US did that, so no. 5. Is there such a thing as spiritual affinity? Do kindred souls truly recognize each other from afar? I don't think so. If from "afar" you mean like you catch someone's eye and you and she (or he, depending on your case) have a moment ... I don't think this has anything to do with spirits or souls. I think it's chemistry. I have been curious about exactly what makes one person attracted to another. There have been a number of occasions in my life where I've found myself attracted to someone who wasn't necessarily that sexy or pretty. One of the earliest examples goes all the way back to elementary school. I had a huge crush on a girl for a number of years. She had an identical twin, though I didn't feel the same feelings for the twin. I do think there might be something like "kindred souls" but not in a romantic sense. I think two people might know instantly that they're going to be good friends or more depending on sex and sexuality / attraction. I've met guys that I knew I'd be friends with and others I knew I'd hate. Then again I've also met guys I thought I'd hate but after getting to know them a bit realized they're pretty cool and we became good friends. I have no idea how any of this works. .
