Staff -- Jay Nemrow Review of Homework Maria and Alida -- Get together at the first part of next week to polish the presentation. This was done. Maria -- Go to Mrs. Segura about having the mid-school kids take the paper teen pregnancy quiz and how it would be best to do this. Things just haven't been connecting. Mrs. Segura still wants this to happen. The schools are getting overwhelmed by requests to conduct surveys. Report on the Commission Presentation It was recieved well and their question was "What can we do to solve it?" It would be nice if these groups got together after these presentations and put together plans on what to do about teen pregnancy. Alida reports that 25% of the 7th graders are sexually active, reported by MCCH sources. There was some discussion of the video for schools and church groups and how important it would be to get these out into the county. Alida and Maria were invited to do the 7:30 KTNM radio show on the 27th. **This is a community outcome** The group wants the 25% sexually active shared but Alida will speak with administration ahead of time about the statistic. People should be refered to the health office to borrow or see the videos. There was discussion of cultural influences on early pregnancy and that having a goal in life can help a person make a decision against risky sex practices. Maria asks what should be presented on the radio and who else will go. Jay will go with Maria on the 27th. We also will field requests for presentations for groups during the summer, but will not promote the presentation until next year. Report on Teen Pregnancy Coalition New Pathways meeting: They all agreed that there needs to be comprehensive sex ed in the schools, more work on fathers, more chlid care, and lots of discussion on fatherhood and parenting, perhaps even mandatory parenting classes. Funding is being sought at the state level to do these things. Discussion of the possibility of the schools being mandated to do teen pregnancy prevention. Report on the results on the Mid-school quiz Already discussed. Create a report and recommendations to the Council. Alida asks that the group think about making a recommendation to coordinate requests to outside groups through the Council. We may hit up the schools too often as committees. This needs to be managed (though we don't know how). Brenda suggests that perhaps the Council tries to do too much at a time. Is the Council stretched too far to meet its obligations to monitor commitee activities. It was suggested that we have TP committee meet at the schools and work to put together a group of youth to do specific work that appeals to them. **Recommendation: The Council needs to consider the need to coordinate things or not so as not to be overwhelming to others. We do not want to be falling over each other getting to certain groups.** **Recommendation: The committee develop a teen group that works on issues around reducing teen pregnancy among their peers.** (This will need facilitation, perhaps from the TPCoalition or LaNell Leatherwood.) **Accomplishments** - Youth attended some of our meetings and we had outreach to kids to get their input. - The Family Planning process was flowcharted. - A successful presentation was developed, which built up community awareness of our teen pregnancy problem. - We got the schools to the table. - Maria connected with the New Mexico Teen Pregnancy Coalition. Jessie will present this at the MCCH meeting. 0
