Lea County – delivers pernatal care at one time 50% of prenatal cases. Now, about 1/3. There were a lot of teenagers coming through the program. This is a condensed version of a presentation usually given to nurses for CEUs. 9/11 has changed the way we think about things and so does teen pregnancy. It affects all of us far beyond a teen having a baby. Example of a scared 14 year old with a positive pregnancy test. *Teen Pregnancy – the problem* page Primary reasons for Teen Pregnancy: o Less contraceptive use and use of less effective contraceptives. o The birth rate is higher (fewer teens choose abortion than in other countries) *Teen pregnancy in New Mexico* page. There was discussion of how the county rates are counted: by county where the child was born or the county where mom resides. Teens have more complications. Paternity might be difficult to establish. Nutrition is typically poor, at a time when they need better than normal nutrition. Pregnant teens typically gain too much weight (diabetes possibility; depression) or don't gain at all (hiding pregnancy, body conciousness). Emotional problems. Depression may be passed to baby, creating further problems. Teens may often need counseling and medication to deal with depression associated with pregnancy. More likely to give birth to low-birth-weight babies which can lead to developmental disabilities. Some discussion of adoption. Also, discussion of factors that contribute to childhood problems. Discussion of prevention – Abstinance and Contraception. Some discussion of parent training for teenagers and older. Discussion of what “sex” is. *THINGS THAT WORK* pages. Discussion of barriers to success that could contribute to teen pregnancy. Two-day Systems Change Meeting Group agrees to a date of October 27-28. Next Meeting: (to create committee structure, ground rules, charter, etc.) The next meeting on Wednesday, October 8 11:30 am – 1 pm. 0
