CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Expressing the sense of Congress that the people of the United States
should be encouraged to rediscover attractions in the States in which
they live.
Whereas the travel and tourism industry is traditionally one of the largest
industries in the United States;
Whereas before September 11, 2001, the rates of travel and tourism were holding
steady;
Whereas after September 11, 2001, tourism declined by 50 percent in some States;
Whereas during the period beginning on September 11, 2001, and ending on
September 30, 2001, air traffic declined by 46 percent, rail traffic
declined by 20 percent, demand for automobile gasoline declined by 5
percent, and recreational visits to national parks declined by 31
percent;
Whereas during October 2001, employment declined by 4 percent in the air traffic
industry, 5.3 percent in the hotel and motel industry, and 2.9 percent
in the restaurant industry;
Whereas the travel and tourism industry is working with all levels of government
to ensure safe travel for all individuals following the horrible
terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001; and
Whereas people who are hesitant to travel long distances for financial or other
reasons can still enjoy the many attractions, events, and venues located
in the State in which they live: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring),
SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
This resolution may be cited as the ``Rediscover Your State
Resolution of 2002''.
SEC. 2. SENSE OF CONGRESS.
It is the sense of Congress that--
(1) the people of the United States should be encouraged to
rediscover the many attractions, events, and venues located in
the State in which they live;
(2) increased travel and tourism is needed to help
stimulate the economy of the United States;
(3) the people of the United States should be encouraged to
resume their normal activities and should contribute to their
local economies by resuming their normal recreational and
entertainment activities; and
(4) the establishment of special initiatives to encourage
tourism at the local level could help revitalize the economy of
the United States.
