CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Promoting national unity and family renewal.
Whereas the unity of the people of the United States is essential to achieve
harmony and prosperity for all the families of the United States;
Whereas the people of the United States have traditionally observed a firm
reliance on God;
Whereas the first amendment of the Constitution guarantees the right of all
citizens of the United States to freely exercise their religious faith;
Whereas the United States has been blessed during its history with some leaders
who espoused a reverence for God, the dream of interracial harmony, and
religiously inspired moral values;
Whereas these religiously inspired moral values have enabled the people of the
United States, regardless of faith, race, or national origin, to foster
our shared ideal to become one nation under God;
Whereas these religiously inspired moral values have served as the cornerstone
for maintaining strong, cohesive, and productive families; and
Whereas it is incumbent on the religious, political, and community leaders of
the United States to set an example of unity and reconciliation in order
to restore civic peace and harmony among all the people of the United
States: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring),
That--
(1) there should be established a Year for National Unity
and Family Renewal to invoke the intercession of Almighty God
to bring about national unity, national reconciliation, and
family renewal in the new millennium; and
(2) the President should issue a proclamation calling on
the people of the United States and interested organizations to
observe such a year with appropriate programs and activities,
including religious observances and the sponsorship of civic
initiatives.
