WHAT IS EASY MODE Easy Mode is an easy-to-use searching interface that gives you access to all the health information available in these health sciences databases: MEDLINE AIDSLine CancerLit HEALTH Nursing & Allied Health (CINAHL) PsycINFO Easy Mode offers basic search functions and the ability to print or capture documents; the full search mode provides more sophisticated search and downloading capabilities. To switch to Full Mode, type E. Then type F. This guide addresses Easy Mode only. ABOUT THE DATABASES MEDLINE, 1966 to present, covers the international literature on biomedicine, including the allied health fields and the biological and physical sciences, humanities, and information science as they relate to medicine and health care. It is updated monthly. AIDSLINE (AIDS Information Online) provides comprehensive coverage of research, clinical and policy issues about AIDS from 1980 to the present. It is updated quarterly. CancerLit, 1986 to present, covers all aspects of cancer therapy and research from journals, symposia, government reports, and selected books. It is updated monthly. HEALTH (Health Planning and Administration) covers the international literature on health care planning and facilities, health insurance, financial management, manpower planning, and personnel administration, from 1975 to the present. It is updated monthly. Nursing & Allied Health (CINAHL) covers over 900 of the English language journals related to nursing and the allied health disciplines from 1983 to present. It is updated monthly. PsycINFO, 1967 to present, covers over 1300 professional and academic journals, dissertations and book chapters on psychology and related disciplines. It is updated quarterly. HOW TO ACCESS 1. If you are using a modem, set it to 9600 baud (minimum). 2. Set your terminal emulation for VT100. 3. Connect to OhioLINK from your local library system or, using your local campus network, telnet to OhioLINK: telnet cat.ohiolink.edu login: ohiolink 4. Select "Research Databases" from the OhioLINK menu. 5. Select "Health Sciences." 6. Select a database to search. IMPORTANT KEYS ^ This is the CONTROL key (also CTRL). Hold it down while pressing a letter. ARROWS Use the arrow keys to move up and down lists. SPACEBAR Use the SPACEBAR key to select or deselect items in lists. ESC Use the ESCAPE key to back up one screen or to cancel a menu. TAB Use the TAB key to move the cursor from one area of the screen to another. Subject search [U] Press U. At the pop-up window, enter a subject, then press . Your entry will be mapped to a valid subject heading and will result in a list of possible choices. Use the arrow keys and spacebar to select a medical subject and press . The following screen offers you the option to broaden or narrow the subject. Press when you have finished selecting. In the next screen, you will have the option to restrict the search to focus articles. It is recommended that you do NOT restrict the search and that you select "All Documents." Press . The final subject search screen allows you to select only those aspects of your topic (subheadings) that are relevent. Use the arrows and the spacebar to select as many subheadings as you wish. You can also simply select "Include All Subheadings." Press . Author search [A] Press A. At the pop-up window, type in the author's last name, then first name or initial. Journal search [J] Press J. Enter the journal title starting with the first word. If you are not sure of the exact title, use the Textword search option. Textword search [T] Press T. Enter words to be found in the title or abstract. Combine sets [O] Combine the results of two or more search sets. You will be prompted to select sets and to choose "AND" or "OR". "AND" finds the items that the sets have in common. "OR" combines all of the items from the sets. Limit set [L] This function allows you to restrict the results of a previous search by limit factors such as language, year, human subject or latest update. You will be prompted to select one of your sets, and choose a limit factor from a list of available limits. View set [V] (and Saving Documents) Allows you to view and select individual documents from a result set to print or save. To save, you must be using a workstation with capture capability and a floppy or hard disk. In Easy Mode, screen capture is the only save method. Print set [P] Send a set of documents to an attached printer. A pop-up window will prompt you specify a range of documents to print. You cannot send more than 100 documents at a time. In some instances, you may not be able to print to your attached printer. Questions about local printing should be directed to your library reference staff. New Database [N] You can apply your current search strategy to any of the other health sciences databases or you can start a new search. The system will prompt you to choose.
