5e4 Subj : Mammoth Cave - the Star Trek Connection To : alt.tv.star-trek.tos From : jsavard Date : Mon Sep 12 2005 03:44:01 From Newsgroup: alt.tv.star-trek.tos Mammoth Cave is an extensive system of underground caverns in Kentucky. A National Park was created around it, and it is a popular tourist attraction. One portion of the Mammoth Cave system is known as Colossal Cave. There is also a Colossal Cave near Tucson, Arizona, but that is not the one which became famous as a result of the computer game "Adventure". The part of the Mammoth Cave system that Adventure was actually based upon, however, is not the Colossal Cave portion per se, but instead the portion accessible from the Bedquilt entrance. This fame has led to me performing some Internet searches related to Mammoth Cave, and I have turned up some interesting tidbits. Before he became a world-famous author, H. P. Lovecraft wrote a very short story in his youth about someone who became lost in Mammoth Cave. On a map of Mammoth Cave I saw on a German site, among many of the areas that were given names, was one area called... Tribble's Trouble and this map dates from long before the year Star Trek came to the small screen.
