That reminds me of something that happened to me a long, long time ago
at a convention.  I was sitting in the back of a video room that was
showing the first TNG episode, "Encounter at Farpoint" and there were
a couple guys, maybe 2-3 rows ahead of me saying how awful Wesley was
and how much they hated him.

Of course, I was sitting next to Wil Wheaton at the time.  He was not
really happy about the whole thing.  I'm always going to remember how
bad I felt for him being stuck with such a crappy role.

Given transporter technology (which is what the holodrek was based
on), most things in the Trek universe become ridiculous.  I've pointed
out to people that, given just the first season of TNG, they proved
conclusively that people should be immortal.  Death should have no
meaning.  The whole lack of rationality in Trek past TOS is just
ludicrous.
