Difference is that joining the UFP is voluntary.  The Alliance will
*force* you to join, at gunpoint, over your own dead body if need be.

Also the Federation (especially TOS-era) was decidedly idealistic: No
secret evil experiments on someone's sister.

Ironically, the Federation would allow you greater individuality than
the jack-booted "unity" forced on you by the Alliance.
