[snip] >As for TOS, who in their right mind could find TOS better than TNG? TOS was >a pitiful series with like 5 great episodes, 10 ok episodes, and like 50 >really lousy episodes. I'm surprised it was capable of launching the Trek >empire it did. That's a very good point. The heuristic value of TRek is all out of proportion to what one might reasonably expect. Who in 1970 would predict that Trek would spawn ten movies, five television series, and a lucrative cottage industry of Trek merchandise? I'm convinced that Trek's success is due only in part to its worthiness. The other factor that weighs heavily is the ubiquitous syndication of the early shows. That put Trek in front of the viewing audience in a way that almost could not be ignored. Over time, TOS won the day. But had the decision been made not to syndicate it, I don't think Trek achieves anything like its overall success, and we're posting in a different newsgroup. . 0
