The original Trek had plenty of soap opera, especially between the trio
of Spock Kirk, McCoy.  There were plenty of sappy scenes.  *And I liked
it*.  I fell in love with those characters loooong before I became a
science addict.

As for DS9, I think it's more akin to the West Wing in space.  Lots &
lots of political machinations between the Cardassians, Federation,
Bajorans, and Dominion for control of the wormhole.  (Ditto that other
show Babylon 5.)
