541 Subj : TNG vs TOS - anybody still think Next Generation sucks? To : rec.arts.sf.tv,rec.arts.startrek.current,alt.tv.star-trek.tos,alt.tv.star-trek.next-gen,alt.battlestar-galactica From : electrictroy Date : Thu Sep 29 2005 06:21:39 From Newsgroup: alt.tv.star-trek.tos I was just reviewing a website about the New Galactica.... about how the old fans feel "betrayed" by this new series, and it's inferior to the original show, and "please sign this petition to bring back the original actors". That reminded me of the Usenet newsgroup rec.arts.startrek back in 1987/88/89. Back then Trekkies were up in arms & saying the Next Generation was an insult to the original Trek series with Kirk, Spock, et cetera (and Picard was a wimp). Is there anyone out there who, ~15 years later, still thinks TNG is an inferior-quality show & and insult to the original series/fans? .. My opinion is that, yes, in 1987-89, TNG was inferior to the original series. Two years of lousy stories. So I can understand why netizens of 1987-89 thought TNG was an insult to the loyal fandom. And yet, ultimately in seasons 3-6, TNG outshone the original series in the quality of story telling. I don't consider TNG an inferior show. Nor do I think the New Galactica is inferior. Different, yes, but not inferior. troy . 0
