McFadden returned at least one year before Roddenberry's death.  My
guess is that he relented because the Pulaski character just wasn't
flying.

While I certainly despised Pulaski it was never anything against
Muldaur.  She might have stayed if her character had been anything
worth watching- problem was the writing, not the actress.

Pulaski was a pale, bloodless copy of McCoy, not a clone.  They had her
parrot all of his annoying traits (distrust of technology and
transporters, for example) but worst was her constant digs at Data for
the crime of not being human.  Granted it was supposed to be a copy of
the McCoy/Spock dynamic, but with McCoy and Spock even when they sniped
at each other there was an undercurrent of friendship and genuine
respect.  When Pulaski bitched about Data being an android she was
merely an obnoxious bitch.
