If your memory is photographic, then you don't really need to have the
text quoted back later, even if you elected not to respond.

If your memory in not photographic, then you undoubtedly do miss
context when you respond to any message that is part of an ongoing
thread--particularly if you have not chosen to take part in that thread
before.

Notice I used the word "chosen."  It is never "necessary to respond.
