When I've met persons from other countries on-line I tell them I'm a Texan but that doesn't mean I don't consider myself a US citizen. Further, Kirk was familiar enough with historical US documents to understand them even while being badly mangled. And he was a big fan of the US "Old West." And his hero was Abe Lincoln.
