Seriously though, this is not some wild thing that NBC dreamed up. Roddenberry's own descriptions of Spock described him as "slightly Satanic in appearance". We've often heard that Roddenberry defended Spock on the grounds that there needed to be an alien in the Enterprise's crew to help the viewer know that they were really in outer space. But that doesn't really explain why he had to have this particular appearance. I *assume* that the point was to show that people can't necessarily be judged by appearance, but I've never heard Roddenberry say that, I'm just guessing. . 0
