Actually, it goes back *much* farther than that...

His first outing as a director was "The Curse of the Cat People" in
1944. He edited "Bachelor Mother" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in
1939. He was an uncredited apprentice sound effects editor for "Of
Human Bondage" in 1934.
