Then why couldn't they go around the 'star void' that wasn't spherical, and
whose long dimension they were plowing along?

And why the hell did the writers think they could encounter a 'star void' so
large that you couldn't see stars on the other side of it?  It wasn't
actually opaque; it was just SO FREAKING BIG YOU COULDN'T SEE STARS BEYOND
IT! 

And why did they leave the viewscreen set to 'blackness' if it was unnerving
them?  Set the damn viewscreen to display something ELSE.
