He set it down in the ashtray (I had to watch that scene a couple of
times, because the movement was kinda subtle - "Wait, where'd his
cigarette go? Rewind that."), like the burned-down butt we saw at the
very beginning. Since - going by the contents of the ashtray - he
smokes filtered cigarettes (Marlboros... yuck!), his lit cigarette was
OK where it was.
