Actually, no. Most cases that were attributed to 'overlying' were more likely to have either been SIDS or intentional infanticide. (And some were, no doubt, the result of babies smothering in feather beds or under heavy quilts.) My friends were not drunk or on drugs or heavy > sleepers. He rolled over on her and that was that. (And it's usually advised to have the baby sleep between mom and the edge of the bed rather than between the two parents, since mom's seem to have more of the 'instinct' to protect the baby in their sleep.) It is a dangerous practice, one with no > real value. *shrug* depends I guess on how you define 'dangerous' and 'real value.' Very rarely tragedies happen. But they also happen in every other possible sleeping arrangement. (Except, I suppose, for having an adult watching the sleeping child every minute of the night...) Co-sleeping appears to reduce the incidence of SIDS. For some mothers, if the baby is waking often at night, it makes night feedings easier so makes it more likely that mom will continue to breastfeed -- with all the benefits inherant in that. Some moms just sleep better knowing that baby is close by. (Others of course sleep less well, so they don't co-sleep.) If a toddler or a child has a bad dream let them crawl > into bed but there is no reason to bring a baby into bed. None. Tell that to the many thousands of parents who co-sleep successfully and find it helpful and safe. Naomi > > Kelley . 0
