Everything's relative. Don't look at the ratings as they relate to past 
seasons. Look at how ER did overall _this_ season in its timeslot. No, 
it wasn't as good as in the past, but it most certainly did not "bomb" 
in the ratings. It certainly isn't going to be unceremoniously yanked 
midseason because of the premiere's ratings. 14.4 million viewers is not 
grounds for cancellation.

Look, it won't be around much longer. It's in its twelfth season. Not 
many shows make it that long at all, certainly not with the overall 
ratings ER has maintained. It's had a good, long innings. Enjoy it for 
what it is.
