All three of my boys weened themselves at about 14 - 16 months of age - not 
by my choice, but by theirs. My first heart break of "they're growing up so 
quickly!".

As for the argument of when breastfeeding is appropraite, what the hell does 
it matter to those not doing or partaking of the breastfeeding? What 
business is it of theirs? It harms no one so why even make a snit of it. I 
can think of a lot worse things we're doing to our small children that folks 
seem to think is fine.
