I'd guess that this idea dates back to when TB was 'consumption' and it
was assumed that you got it from getting chilled.  Since women/girls
were supposed to be extra delicate during that time of the month, it
was extra important that they guard against chills.
Still, I'm amazed that your FATHER would have believed something like
that. I would have thought that old wives tale would have gone out with
crinolines and corsets.
