It's definately the oldest method... not sure if they've came up with a better
idea yet...

The "retort style" (ie: heating) method wasn't financially viable in the 1980s
when crude was at the 2005 equivilent of $80/barrel.  Shell has came up with a
method they claim would be viable at $25-$30/barrel though.
