When running on Solaris 8, consider using the 'Alternate Threads Library':

Check out the newsgroup post where it is said "The default libthread has
always had difficulties/bugs with respect to signals.  Some of these are too
deeply difficult to be fixed. This is one of the reasons why we created the
alternate libthread in Solaris 8"
