Just for reference, upgrading the RPMs as recommended by the RH errata
2003-136 fixed the issue.  (I was mistaken when I said before the
install was freshly "up2date"-ed; seems RH don't support RH9 anymore,
and in fact it was installed from a freshly downloaded CD, which was
mistakenly assumed to be up to date with this sort of thing).
