If you are using a shell connect then any attempt at PPP/SLIP would
be a problem and just confuse the server.

Before I can answer your question I need to know what method you are
using to connect. If you manually respond to "user" and "password"
prompts using a standard dialup terminal app then you can only use
the apps installed on the host system you are connected to. 

If you are using a packet driver to do a PPP/SLIP connect then you
can use your own installed apps for FTP, HTTP, or telnet. 

There are more than one FTP DOS apps but FTP protocol is always FTP
protocol. How you are connected is of more importance at this point
than how FTP works or what app is being used.
