Well, I agree that there should be a built-in command, but - I made the
following macros and put them in my PT3.GLOBAL file:

       do "online:param","Line status: <online> [ok]"
       print "ate1^M"
       exit

       do "online:param","Line status: <offline> [ok]"
       exit
