Basically, ProDOS checks for some machine-identifying ROM code which is not present on some Franklins. Cures were mentioned in a few issues of inCider. The most comprehensive fix seems to be the one published by Jim Sather in his "Apple Clinic" column (March, 1986 issue of inCider): Using Copy II+ or some similar utility with sector or block edit capabilities, search for hex bytes AE B3 FB E0 38 and change to A2 EA EA E0 38. Search for hex bytes 69 0B D0 03 and change to 69 0B EA EA. A quick check of ProDOS 1.7, 1.9, and 2.03 showed the bytes to be present. Evidently, you can expect to find them in most (or all?) versions. Note: The second mod (69 0B EA EA) was commonly made by quite a few users; so, do not be surprised if your particular ProDOS already has this mod. You can use a DOS 3.3 version of Copy II+ to do the searches and changes on ProDOS diskettes. One additional note: I've never owed a Franklin and can not say whether or not Jim Sather's mods work.
