First of all, make sure you've got a proper hardware handshaking cable. If
you don't, you're asking for trouble.

Here's my USR setup:

You might not want to mess with &N and &U unless you know what you're
doing. Leave them both at 0 (zero) and you'll be fine. They determine a
range of forced connection speeds. The way I have them set above will
force a connection between 26400 and 33600 bps, which is what I want for
this ISP account.
