  This sounds like a flowcontrl problem. In the control panel, make sure
the following options are set:

DCD Handshake: no
DSR/DTR Handshake: yes
XOn/Xoff: no

It's the first one that's probably hanging you up; it tells the computer
to ignore/wait-for the modem if no carrier is detected.
