Just write your own implementation of strdup:

char *strdup(const char *s) {
    char *s_copy;
    s_copy = malloc(strlen(s) + 1);
    if (s_copy)
        strcpy(s_copy, s);
    return s_copy;
    }

Come to think of it: add this line before the malloc:

      if (!s)
          return s;

We don't want to copy rubbish from a NULL pointer, after all...
