Due to a number of requests, I'm posting SoftClock on 
comp.binaries.apple2. The following description of Softclock comes 
from the Documentation for Star Trek: First Contact 1.0, by Jim Royal. 
Please note that the version of SoftClock presented here has 
BASIC.SYSTEM as its "Run" option, not STARTREK.SYSTEM.


About SoftClock (SC.SYSTEM)

SoftClock is a ProDOS utility for Apple II users who do not have a 
hardware clock.  It appeared in the April 1989 issue of Nibble 
magazine and is provided as a convenience.  The original version of 
SoftClock had a bug which did not allow it to be used with large 
applications.  The code has been modified to correct this problem.  
You can tell it from the original in that the original used only 
uppercase characters in the title screen.

 If you have a hardware clock, just delete the file from the Star 
Trek: First Contact disk.

 SoftClock will work with any ProDOS application.  It advances the 
clock by one minute each time a file is opened.  It may not keep 
accurate time, but at least it never runs backward.  You will be able 
to tell which of two files was saved earlier in any session.

 SoftClock must be the first .SYSTEM file on any ProDOS boot disk.  
Use Copy II Plus to resort your catalog.

 SoftClock allows you to enter the current date and time, and offers 
you the choice of either running a SYS program or quitting to ProDOS.  
Instructions for entering the date and time are on the title screen.

 To use SoftClock with another ProDOS application, you must customize 
it.  This is simple as changing the name STARTREK.SYSTEM, found near 
the beginning of the SoftClock code, to any other system program name.  
The name starts with a length byte at the sixth byte in the program.  
You can make the change with a sector editor, or do the following from 
BASIC:

 Suppose you need to change the string "STARTREK.SYSTEM" to 
"AW.SYSTEM" (for AppleWriter).

 Type:

 BLOAD SC.SYSTEM,A$2000,TSYS
 MTR or CALL -151 (invoke the monitor)
 2006: 09  (type the length of the name of the system program you 
want)
 2007: 41 57 2E 53 59 53 54 45 4D 00 00 00 00 00 00
  (type in the ASCII codes for the name of the new system program,
  including extra zeros, if needed, to make fifteen characters)
 BSAVE SC.SYSTEM,A$2000,L$45F,TSYS

 If you want to place SoftClock on your AppleWorks startup disk, you 
should insert the text "APLWORKS.SYSTEM" instead.  Be sure to set the 
length byte at $2006 properly.  The name of the system program you 
want SoftClock to exit to must be preceded by a length-of-filename 
byte.
