What you need are the files Dictionary and Merlin.Hdr from your original Merlin 16 disk, and the Converter will then work fine. Actually, we're anticipating a free update disk for Merlin 16+ owners who've mailed in their reg. cards (or updated directly through RWP). This should happen in the next few weeks. Lane Roath has added a PROJECT feature to Merlin that is fantastic, and Glen's extended the support for ENT labels, and library operations. The disk will come automatically in about two weeks. That version is even faster than Merlin 16, has over 100 additional features and functions, and I know it works with 5.0. If you have Merlin 8/16, with the Merlin 16+ version and manual, there should be some information on eqvivalent statements between APW and Merlin. There's also a help file on the Merlin disk that can be accesses from within Merlin with the HELP command. However, no promises that there won't be a new update two weeks from now that there is a separate charge for (no promises there _will_ be an update two weeks from now either!) :) I'm not trying to be difficult - it's simply trying to be accomodating. You can get your disk recopied for a handling charge, and we're happy to do it, but that's independent of any amount we may charge later for the complete update - when it's available. I've got v2.54 and have been very comfortable with it. It DOES come in handy having the ProDOS and DOS 3.3 both. On the other hand, I would think that the major enhancements have been on the //gs side of things. One of the problems I ran into entails using a mouse in the editor. I wrote a tiny interrupt handler to sit at $0300; on any mouse action, it interprets the movement and sends ^J, ^K, ^H, or ^U through KEYIN. At least, that's what it was intended to do. What it ACTUALLY does is start scrolling until it bombs. But then, interrupts aren't my strength. I guess what I'm asking is whether there's a mouse-bassd editor for Merlin 8. Merlin 16+ is very much faster (5-10x), and can output files that run under any operating system (ProDOS 8, 16, GSOS, or even DOS 3.3 if you convert the output file back). I'm not sure about the mouse problem, but Merlin 16+ does have a number of mouse operations for editing in it's editor, and is in general very nice to use. Let me know if you have other questions. I run the converter, and that does a great job... then I need to convert macros. That's where the problem originates. I can get some macros to convert, however some don't work. (like pullword.. in lower case) The manual says that you should update the parms file and change the last bit on line 120 to a '1' so Merlin isn't case sensitive. I do that, save the source, and assemble it, creating an object code. I copy that over the parms file in Merlin 16 root directory. However, whenever I try Macgen again for this apw program, it still shows macros such as pullword and pushword even after I select the /merlin.16/tool.macros directory. Am I doing something wrong? Also, some weird commands also show up in the undefined macro screen of macgen...i.e. anop, and _OpenGS and _CloseGS, etc. Are those new tool calls not included on version 3.50 of merlin 16? I'm also interested in upgrading v.3.5.0 to any newer version of m16 (if there is one) and also to the latest of Merlin 16+ (does M16+ also have commands to convert apw source/macros to m16?) In some cases, you have to run MacGen a second time on a source file. It has to do with the order in which some macros are defined in the source file. This may have been improved in later versions of Merlin 8/16. 2. Anything that the converter doesn't understand (or need, like "anop" = blank line, do nothing), gets moved to the comment field, so you can see what got changed. I would think a macro like _OpenGS, even if undefined, would not be moved to a comment line. 3. The current version of Merlin 16+ is 4.08. If you have only Merlin 16, the update is $45.95 + $4 s/h (+ $3.33 tax in CA) for the new Merlin 16+. Merlin 16+ is a GSOS complete re-write of Merlin 16, much faster, over 100 new features, new manual etc. All you need to do to get the update is mail or call in your serial # from Merlin 8/16 manual (inside front cover) along with check or charge card info. The next day, after you start up Merlin, you type the command: Project Load MyFile The Project Manager then loads the source file that was in memory when the save was done, and restores all the prefixes and preferences from that moment. You can have as many different project names as you wish. This makes it very easy to move from project to project, with the prefix being set to the proper directory on a hard disk. Typing Project ? lists all the currently active projects. Sorry I can't be very informative on the bug fixes in 4.08 over previous versions. I believe most were to very obscure problems with GSOS. We will be mailing an update notice to all Merlin owners later this year with an offer for a version past 4.08, so I'd recommend you wait just a little longer. When I am looking up information on segments in Apple IIgs ProDOS 16 reference manual it says for further information see Apple IIgs Programmer's Workshop Reference. I assumed this was for programmers using the Apple Programmer's Workshop Assmbler. Is the latest manual for Merlin 16+ going to include more information about OMF segments and system loader data tables. Then, MacGen would generate macros for the source code in memory. This would be much easier than saving the file, typing "mac filename" and then reloading the file etc... - the second addition you'd need to add to make this work would be the ability to add macros to a file. For instance, if a source file had a "use macro.file" in it, MacGen could make the macros for the source file and then add them to the end of macro.file. If the file had multiple use's then add the macros to the last of these. Then the user could simply type "mac" and the macros would be created and saved in one pass! Maybe if then ther could be a bit in the paramaters that would control this - if an assembly causes an error because of an unknown macro name, run MacGen. Also, Merlin doesn't handle the high byte of a 32 bit value very well. I noticed this bug when I was working with controls. If you say "editTextControl = $85000000" and then later in the program put write "adrl editTextControl" this assembly will just be 00 00 00 00. I thought the PROJECT program for the GS was great. Seemed like the only problem I had with it was remembering directories when I wanted to switch projects... or some problem like that in form. I've always got a bunch of different directories on my hard disk with the source to various Xcmds, utilities, etc., and it's great to be able to just start up Merlin, type Project , and instantly be in the right directory, with the last source file I was working on. I have projects all over my hard disk, and PROJECT starts any of them just fine; the problem is, I forget where they are, and cant get at them without PROJECT, have to do find file, etc, etc... Maybe an appleworks-like interface... How about a way to make Merlin (&Project) co-resident with HyperStudio and HyperCard. Create a (mostly) bullet proof way to write and test XCMDs from within HyperCard/HyperStudio. I have a program that calls it with a JSL (in native mode). Everything links fine, control gets back to my program, the program exits and then Merlin crashes... Is there something that gets screwed up in Merlin that I need to save before I call this? Even with simple linker files like: cmd cat this happens. (I know the crash happens in merlin because I can see my program exiting with GS bug, then I see the PHK,PLB of merlin and some more code and then something crashes.) And nothing seems to happen when I don't call the linker. (ie I set up the filename etc. but never actually do the JSL...) I'd really like to get this to work. Am I doing something wrong? Does the entry point work (I really hope it does..) It works fine as is but, for one thing, why can't you select the files the way you can with all the other utilities? (ie check off the two files you want to compare instead of typing in the name.) Also, I'd like to see a better interface for it. The whole screen update whenever you press a key right now... Anyways, I really use this feature a lot and would like to see it looking as good as all the other utilities do. (like in the disk command prompt for instance and maybe for the load and save prompts..) I guess I'm hooked on Nifty List's command history where you can move through everything with the arrow keys. Also, it would be neat to add way to catalog files that match a string - nothing fancy. I know about that. If you have nifty list you know what I mean. I just think it's a pain to have to keep retyping everything when you're testing something - especially if you type some huge line with one typo. Missing these two features severely cripples what little of a psuedo-shell Merlin has, IMO. Also notice how something like: copy hls.b saved/hl14.s copy hl.s hls.b Right after another from the "shell" will give you "MLI ERROR 50" (file already open) when you type the second line? <
