@eff @davidgreene This hits even harder for LGBTQ+ and questioning youth many of whom may have nowhere to turn to anymore. At the same time, we (speaking from Europe) refuse to outright ban some social media that destabilises the whole of society in many different ways and while youth may be harmed on a personal level adults being indoctrinated by social media get to vote and cause actual societal harm.But let's score short term political points instead, and even that barely.

@davidrevoy I'm a writer. The same thing happens to me but with words. I'm at a point where I almost don't want to write anymore, let alone publish it. It has always been my passion and seriously helped me work through trauma. And now it's all but gone, at least the creative work. Right. Introduction post.It’s a little complicated (and probably too long and too much).I’ve been lieven for a few years now but it’s not my actual name. My real name is that rare I can find only about 5 people with the same name in the world (but none with the same spelling). Seemingly I’m the only one in Europe, at least in modern times.That’s what happens when you choose your name with care and take a few years to find it. My previous name was also rare though shared with a famous cartoon (not intentional). There’s a story why that name became history too. Maybe one day I’ll share. The name originally given to me came alongside a traumatising religious event by the two people who ended up abusing me until I was removed from the home at 13 and those two eventually had a judge revoke their parental rights.I take a lot of pride in the person I’ve become – me. It was not easy to get here. At the same time, there’s still a lot of lingering trauma and I’ve yet to find my tribe. As an outspoken queer neurodivergent mixed-race writer who consistently writes about society’s errors and highlights the lives of the vulnerable among us I’ve made a lot of enemies and have seen a lot of violence. I’m an activist who doesn’t hold up a protest sign but a mirror.Proud as I am of my identity, I am also deliberately anonymous online. Not by choice, but for my safety. I hope you understand.That said, I am very much human. Too human, at times.I care and am fiercely political. Given my identity I have no choice. I wish more people cared.Beyond all that, I mentor queer youth. I am a storyteller and help others tell their stories. I am an artist who works primarily online, with text; sound and sometimes animation. I build pretty little confrontational worlds. I have a diverse professional background and am occasionally hired to do other things as well. Sometimes you just need the money.I’m a millennial but I’ve come to the conclusion linear time no longer serves me.If I am not online I am probably working out, reading or sleeping.I’m barophobic but that’s only sensible.Want to seduce me? @ariadne That actually seems a terrible idea even if it were possible. They have fundamentally different values and the whole way these spaces are set up contradict the fediverse in just about every way possible. Frankly, seeing the people of those platforms and what the average post is like these days seems like hell were it to enter the fediverse en masse. Glad it's a pipe dream.Aren't we here because we don't want to be there?The non-tech part will be crucial tho. I am new here and fairly tech savvy but notice there's a whole lot to learn and figure out. It takes some base knowledge and dedication, each of which will be a struggle too many for many people.I have made it a mission to completely turn my tech, services and platforms around (and have, for about 90%) but it's not necessarily easy and I did have to force myself to push through and keep at it quite a few times.

You still leave it the choice of the user.I understand the friction here and I am not saying there's an easy answer but at the same time we do make sure other communities have some protection/support - you can't go spew racist or homophobic bs for example.

@jon I'm a person of colour (born and raised in the EU). I don't think I've ever crossed a Schengen border by train and not get checked. Often the only person in the coach as everybody else is typically white and if there's another person of colour they get checked too.I even had them call in my details to some central location to make sure I am not a problem.It's infuriating and slightly embarrassing. Everyone knows what is happening but no one ever says a thing (sort of understandable though, but it makes you feel very lonely).Schengen what?

When it comes to the shutdown of Autistici/Inventati we really should reserve most of our anger for our leaders right here in Europe. They allowed this to happen.Sure, the US government is beyond evil and before that, optimistically, merely problematic. But they only hold this power over Europe and European companies, initiatives and whatnot because we've allowed for it. That's on us.The shutdown of A/I saddens me but it is also the only reasonable choice they had and they should be commended not wanting to cause harm to their users. Europe needs to do better. Today. There's absolutely no reason for us to be in this embarrassingly submissive position.@cavallette
