LineageOS: what breaks? Banking. I have a fairly robust risk appetite, but rooting a device to install a closed-source fork of Magisk that hides itself well enough that I can spoof Play Integrity so my bank's app will run is a few steps too far in the wrong direction. So choose what you prefer: access to your money, or some amount of control over your digital leash.I see no way forward after September that doesn't involve having two phones: one that mostly lives at home for the applications that absolutely won't run without maximum verification, and one for daily use. At that point, I might as well get a used iOS device for the banking stuff.This fucking sucks.

Had to disassemble the P14s to try and resolve a fan that buzzes under heavy load, so I swapped the gummy CPU thermal paste for a sheet of PTM7950. The system appears to be responding normally to thermal load. I'm not gonna go full Phoronix on it. The fan is still buzzing, however.

@selea Prusa, but used. Or Creality, with half the budget set aside for upgrades and replacement parts. Tbh I'd go with the Prusa, since makerspace implies some level of tragedy of the commons.

Tech has flattened out so much in the last 20 years. Ok, there's Apple shipping 3-generations-previous Nvidia performance with lower power consumption, but there's no *alien technology*. No SGI CAVEs, no wild DEC Alpha CPU frequencies, just laptops and slightly nicer laptops and a few very nice laptops with a lot of RAM. And LLMs. Boring. Yawn.

Just observed something cool on my phone (Pixel 8a): the camera flash LED apparently continued faintly glowing for several minutes after I'd stopped using it to see in the dark. I thought that perhaps power was leaking to it after I powered the phone down and saw it STILL glowing, but then I powered up and briefly toggled the flash, and noticed that the glowing was brighter and oranger thereafter. This is some kind of phosphorescent doping on the LED module that is pumped by the diode! I'm guessing the point is that it fluoresces in another part of the spectrum to add some warmth to the cold native flash color. Once charged up, it continues to emit for a while after the pump is switched off, like a glow-in-the-dark geegaw.I just think this kinda shit is super neat, especially when it catches me by surprise like this.
