       @eff I can vouch for this - I was on a jury for a drunk driving charge and one of the things presented as evidence was footage from the family's own doorbell camera used to establish the time and that the accused was driving.

       @gamingonlinux My "good" controller seems to have gone missing in the last month, so it's a well-timed replacement. In the long run, I expect to have two, as the Steam Machine is also supposed to come with one - which is ok, I like some two-player games. But if I can get one now and they offer the Steam machine without, I'll likely go without.

       @eff It also won't work.Prohibition never does.It just drives the behavior underground. All this will do is spur new research into other ways to hide the signature of the prohibited traffic.  I already know of several. Evolution in action.

       @dangillmor If a politician is elected and switches parties after the election, would "turncoat" not be an accurate description?I mean, yes, AI slop and a false quote are both issues.  But "turncoat" seems a fairly good summary.

       @gamingonlinux More importantly - cosmetic surprises.Unlike *most* gacha games, I believe the loot boxes in question are just cosmetic variants on the same items.If you outlaw these - to be consistent, any blind box or booster pack card games also gotta go. In fact those should go first, because they have actual game-advantage items.I expect Valve to prevail on the merits - or rather the lack thereof - of the Prosecutor's case.

       @gamingonlinux And *entirely predictable*. Create a new product in high demand with super limited supply. Something quality.Now, to make it worse, make it so the process of getting it is "fair" - a lottery. So people who would normally not care too much are in the lucky early pool. (Clicking like a madman at 10am sucks, but it ensures only the motivated are participating)Now you get someone who wanted it, but not a ton, and yeah it's expensive... but they can buy it and guaranteed flip it on ebay and make a grand? Boom - a new scalper is born.Valve sabotaged themselves if their goal was to get systems into the hands of their actual end-users at the price they set. The fix is boring: pre-orders with a significant deposit *and* scaling production to actually meet day-one demand closer. Maybe restricting those pre-orders to prior direct hardware purchasers - people who bought the steam deck or controller - people invested in the ecosystem. Valve is still thinking like a software company (infinite digital supply) and it shows.

       @Thorin @eff Until an AI notetaker can reliably demonstrate the ability to discern sarcasm, hyperbole, humor, exaggeration, and about 47 other things humans do in speech and both annotate the transcript and parse the change in meaning - they're worse than useless as they can and will misrepresent reality. In my actual personal I've-seen-it-happen experience. The replacement for a recording needs to be getter not worse.
