@mms this is one of the BSD Cafe problems:- great friends come in- we promote self hosting- they start self-hosting- the Cafe loses one "user"But the good thing is: once you're part of the BSD Cafe, no matter what your handle is, you'll always be a "friend of the bar."

For the first time in my life, my home internet is faster than the connection on my datacenter servers. For once, the bottleneck isn't here, it's there. Meaning, I can self-host stuff right here at the same speed as over there. And I already have a couple of ideas on WHAT to host, on top of what I'm already running (and more efficient backups, obviously).It's just a shame about the quality of the installation work. Seriously, unbelievable. Outside, the fiber cable wasn't even properly secured; it's just dangling off the wall with a couple of zip ties in the most pathetic way. If someone walks by on the inner pavement, they could easily snap it. I'll have to take some time and try to fix it myself... but overall, the outcome is still extremely positive. And finally, I have native IPv6, without needing any more Tunnel Brokers.#FTTH #ipv6 #WeNeedMooarIPV6

I managed an e-commerce server for about ten years. It grew from a small local shop into a major national business, even handling international orders. They expanded to the point where they reduced their local brick-and-mortar store hours because the bulk of their revenue was coming from online sales.Then one seller came along and convinced them that switching to Shopify would be the key to growing even further. Apparently, their €130/month bare-metal redundant setup - which boasted a calculated uptime of 99.995% over 10 years - just wasn't cutting it anymore.They’ve been on Shopify for about six months now, and every now and then, I still get the alerts. I left the monitoring active via Uptime Kuma and ran the numbers. Over the last six months, their uptime dropped below 98%. In other words, in just six months, they’ve been down for almost as many hours as they were during the entire previous decade.I contacted the client - not because I want to take over the hosting again, but just to understand what on earth happened (we're on excellent terms). @david_chisnall I totally agree. I think it's related to scale (how many techs per server/datacenter?) and complexity. In my experience, (unnecessary) complexity usually lowers the uptime.

@jerome Total outsourcing on a proprietary platform, with a complete loss of control over the very platform your livelihood depends on. If Spotify were to increase its prices tenfold tomorrow (Broadcom-style), you'd be trapped. If a government decided to block services to specific foreign countries tomorrow, your livelihood would be compromised.There may be reasons of convenience, I don't doubt that. But in my view, at least for that specific client (and many of mine), the disadvantages and risks far outweigh the benefits.

@mirabilos @jerome I usually tell my clients that I can be replaced by anyone with skills in these areas, for standard and relatively simple setups. However, if by replaceable you mean “that even a junior without experience can do it”, you are just going to get into trouble.

I promised it, so here it is. This is a recording of littleFedi running on a Raspberry Pi Zero W on NetBSD. Everything is on the SD card, the database is SQLite, and caching is enabled.Personally, I won't comment on responsiveness or anything else; I'll just say that when I use it (both via the web interface and with apps like MastoBlaster or IceCubes), I find it hard to believe what kind of hardware it's running on.Users' sessions (by default, a maximum of 8 users but configurable) are kept "warm" with every interaction or federated activity for 15 minutes since the last login; after that, the server enters "low power mode" and simply processes incoming data without activating the (users' timelines, etc.) cache.We don't need to get ripped off for more powerful hardware, which comes with outrageous costs these days.
