Do YOU want to write game dialogue for #UE5? Would you like to write the whole script in text like a movie script, that's easy to edit, and version control friendly? Want to perform camera cuts, sync with cutscenes, and animate characters?Announcing the SUDS Pro Dialogue System that does all of this and more, now available on Fab: https://fab.com/s/c80e7c961216I've put a lot of work into this and it's finally here. Boosts appreciated! š #gamedev #unrealengine

I saw a young person ask ChatGPT how long their flight was today when they were literally holding the boarding pass with that information on it in the same hand that had the phone in it. ChatGPT spat out about 4 paragraphs on the subject when the answer was ā40 minutesā. What a time to be aliveEdit: this blew up so Iām muting it now to save my notifications. No, I didnāt make it up for clicks, Iād have preferred fewer. Just a little anecdote from a tiring day that Iām trying to relax from now

I think what I've learned since being introduced to the idea of a cyberpunk dystopia in the 80's, is that it isn't dystopia just when big rich tech companies control everything, it's when most people start being fine with that.

@aeva itās good that they listened, although they *did* still take the money, and just labelled it differently. Still not sure if I think thatās ok

@aeva @sylvia_ritter my only concern is that they still get some reputational benefit from being a donor and Iād rather they didnāt. But I am ok with them having less money and Blender having it. I just would have preferred them to be flipped off rather than (initially) glad-handed

Itās looking increasingly likely that if you need stable systems for the next couple of years, forking important dependencies just before December 2025 and only cherry picking fixes since (and reviewing them) is the only sane choice, unless those projects have sworn off LLMs. Far too many developers have totally lost the plot in favouring velocity over everything else. Iād like to think that engineering principles will eventually re-emerge but for the moment the cocaine is winning

Iām sure part of it is cases where open source maintainers are completely over-worked and under-compensated (been there), are burning out and when something comes along that seemingly provides more output for less effort, maybe it looks like a better outcome than simply stopping. Personally I disagree - I think stopping is a better outcome to moving backwards by slowly eroding trust in what you have. Those by the sidelines who might maintain it properly are then empowered to do so.

This is obvious if youāve been following me for a while, but at this point it bears pinning to my profile: Marie and I donāt use GenAI for anything we work on. Thereās nothing AI generated in our games, not even āfor prototypingā. None of the code I publish, open or closed, has had any LLM input. Nor has any of my writing.I consider GenAI a cursed technology whose negative externalities are too high, and which devalue everything they touch. I want nothing to do with them.

MinerMancers is live on Steam! https://store.steampowered.com/app/3223050/MinerMancers/ MinerMancers is a game about silly wizards going mining together. Delve into the mines alone or with friends to satisfy your employer's ceaseless demand for magical resources. This is a labour of love by my wife and I; there's still a good ways to go, but we're looking forward to showing you more over the course of development.Boosts welcome! Oh and wishlist it if you like the look of things! š

It feels a bit weird having it out there as a Real Thing, knowing how much work we have left to do. But we've made the mistake of leaving it far too late before, and everyone says you should go public as soon as your game is representative and isnāt going to pivot into something else. So here we are, pretending that we have a clue how long it will take to finish this š

Microsoft suits hand-wringing about how much money they're spending on video game studios while pissing billions into the wind on AI would be laughable if it didn't have real consequences for people with actual souls
