       @eff I like the way this is framed as "companies asking permission to violate your privacy". I never thought of it that way.Would a new law specifically prohibit the use of cookie banners? I think it would need to, otherwise people would just keep using them, regardless of the user's browser preference.They are also really annoying for accessibility. They're designed so that a user can easily accept or reject by visually scanning the screen, but screen readers and their users don't benefit from that intuitive design, so we have to spend extra time locating the buttons (which are occasionally links). On the computer that's easy; we just press b a couple of times. On the phone, that's a lot more steps. A good modal will go away when you press escape, but I think anyone in this space knows the likelihood of web designers using good web design practices.The good news is that the extra time allows me to think really hard about whether I want a website to track me or not, so I usually end up pressing the "reject all" button.
