Reminder of the difference between mute and block:Problem: Somebody is posting things you don't want to see.Mute = Solves the problem.Block = Solves the problem spitefully.If the only thing you need is to filter your timeline, then Mute is the correct solution.If your goal is to raise the overall level of hostility and resentment on the fedi, then block away.I, for one, think there's already plenty of hostility and resentment to go around.

That company has been caught red-handed farming and selling data that they swore was sacrosanct so many times by now, you have to assume anything that passes through their servers is being monetized, regardless of what they claim.The preferred "opt-out" method is to not use fakebook or whatsapp or instagram or any other product that company is involved in. They have a corporate culture of lying about what they do with your data.

@eriner @Lars What sorcery is this?I live somewhere that has very soft water, so I admit I'm uneducated about water systems. But "Hard water is water that has a high mineral content," according to the very first sentence of the wikipedia article. Those images all depict a wire wrapped around a sealed pipe. I'm quite certain they're not removing any minerals at all. At best, they're dropping the minerals out of solution and into the pipe at that location. After that, one of two things is happening: The minerals are being deposited into that small section of pipe (how often will you have to redo your plumbing there?), or the minerals are being washed into your appliances and drinking water anyway.What am I missing here?

To all you app developers creating “Click for oAuth” buttons in your app…PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PROVIDE A WAY TO COPY THE URL TO THE CLIPBOARD.Providing an opaque obfuscated “click here” button may give you a smooth uncluttered UI, but it’s also missing critical functionality. Some of us use more than one browser, and not everybody wants every damn link to open in the “default”.(and before you suggest, no, I can’t copy the URL from the default browser either. By the time I alt+tab, it has already forwarded the request to an error URL)

Software development and software testing are two entirely different disciplines. The trend in corporate software to treat them as interchangable or easily combined has caused testing skills to atrophy across the industry. The result is software that is less reliable, less stable, and less secure than a decade ago. Software that needs constant updates just to keep from falling over.The only group of developers who really think about how to test software these days are hackers and security researchers. And many of them wear dark-colored headgear.

In the article, the author points out that the obvious AI entry points in the browser (the toolbar AI button and the omnibar) don't even use the local model. They still send your queries to Google.So you've got a ton of wasted bandwidth and storage space, no consent, no user action, no respect for user preferences (eg: deleting the file), and no privacy benefit because they route everything you type through the Google cloud anyway.

I've given up on synchronous interrupt-driven communication. Notifications off, ringtones silent. When you get 15-20 robocalls a day, it's just not worth answering phone calls - especially from numbers that aren't in the address book.Anyone who wants to get hold of me needs to leave a message - SMS, voicemail, email - somewhere that I can filter and check later, when I get the energy to deal with the bullshit of a world that wants me to be 24/7 connected.

It is extraordinarily difficult to convince someone - someone who is currently experiencing the heat of summer, and who is being bombarded every day with propaganda by news media’s dark red infographics, politicians’ well-spun lies, academics’ carefully selected statistical half-truths, and social media’s hyperbole and hysteria - it is exceptionally difficult to convince this person that despite all of this coordinated gaslighting, there have been other hot summers before this one, and that the exceptionalism they’re mistaking for “climate change” is merely a psychological Recency Effect, sustained by people who benefit financially and politically from your well-orchestrated panic.
