The thing you have to understand about the gospels is that they were written in the style of greek/jewish literature, weaving together oral traditions that by the point at which the gospels were written down were already a generation or two old.. There's also some prophetic interpretation going on there  Point is Jesus was born in Bethlehem because Prophecy. which naturally leads to the question well how'd he there. And everyone just runs with the Census explanation for 2k years. The Bible is a *human text* allbieit one written under divine inspiration. It is not a history book or a science book. It is what our ancestors in faith have handed on to us.
