       @Gargron There was a science fiction story some years ago,  by that druid fellow, Greer...He imagined a small post-American nation that, after being burnt badly before, carefully and thoughtfully chose what technologies they would embrace and use. Clothing that lasted. Streetcars. Newspapers. Wired analog phones. Choosing short sustainable supply chains. Refusing to use technologies with terrible unacknowledged "externalities".They chose how to live. That was the interesting part!

       3 years back, teacher acquaintance said to me, "School district IT won't support old classroom laptops, so they are all going to e-waste. Trash!        @ariadne When I once was working as a support engineer, my coworker gave me a plush baby nyarlathotep, and it sat on my desk in my cube. Cute!Because... "terrible monsters from unknowable dimensions"...right?Salespeople would go make ridiculous promises, sell weirdo configs, then when those went bad, they'd march right into our cubes and angrily demand that we fix.One sales dude had instant strong hatred of baby nyarlathotep, spotting it and angrily barking,"What the hell is that?!?"
