       Computers used to be fun. I used to use Windows 9x, and it was unstable as hell, and you kept having to lean over backwards to get things to work. Then I used bleeding edge Linux, and at some point I've ended up running pure framebuffer tty for months because X11 was broken. But despite all the breakage (or maybe even because of it), it was fun. It was fun because random accidental breakage was the worst you could expect.Nowadays, accidental breakage is rare. Things are relatively stable. However, every step of the way you have to watch out for bad actors. No, not criminals, they are rare. Evil corporations who are looking at every opportunity to fuck you up. Using computer is no longer fun, it's no longer a tool that helps you, and it's no longer your choice. You are forced to use it, and if you don't want to be hurt every step of the way, you have to spend all the effort on fighting back. And you're fucked up anyway, because even if you manage, your family and all the people around you won't care and will let their devices, their computers and their smartphones fuck you up.I've started using FLOSS so many years ago, for the trivial reason that I didn't want to pay for software. I stayed because I enjoyed doing it. And I wanted to make a difference, I wanted to contribute positively to the world. Even if in a little way, but I wanted to be able to say that as much harm I've done to the planet, there's at least something positive to balance it out.But nowadays I hate FLOSS. It's been overrun by the worst people in the world. The people who aren't happy with just fucking you up. They want everyone to keep fucking everyone up. It's the kind of horror where whatever you do, it turns out you're causing harm.I don't trust my #Gentoo #packaging work anymore. So much of the software I touch turns out to be #slop. When I file a pull request, I'm worried it will trigger #LLM reviews. When I file a bug, I'm worried it will trigger LLM responses. And today, I've learned that my old bug report to a #NoAI project resulted in a dozen slop pull requests already. Whatever you do, #AI folks smile and tell you "see, you fucked up the world even more after all".Honestly, I don't know what to do. I hate all of this so much. But even if I managed to figure out something else to do for a living, I can't escape computers.        Some people think that #LLM usage costs rising will start undoing some of the harm caused by the #AI hype. I don't think that's really going to help that much.I'm not even talking about all the projects that were ensloppified and enshittified already. I'm not talking about all the technical debt. I'm not talking about all the forks that will have to be maintained forever. I'm not talking of all the projects that were abandoned because of burnout, or because they were only hype-oriented. And I'm not talking about all the corporations that will continue submitting slop.I'm talking about the loss of trust. After all, we're not talking of people who realized they were wrong and are sorry. We're not talking of people realizing that it was wrong to forfeit ethics and morals in the name of "productivity". We're talking of people who are jumping ships because their previous approach turned out not to be profitable anymore. We're talking of gamblers who left the casino because they went broke. They aren't sorry that they gambled; they are sorry that they've lost. And they'd be happy to do it again at the nearest opportunity.So, I'm sorry to say, but #FreeSoftware is never going to be the same again.        Human translators manage good #translation because they comprehend the original text, know its intricacies and can actually creatively write to preserve its gist. Context is more than the surrounding paragraphs: it includes the cultural and social background, other books, etc. Sometimes it literally involves getting hints from the author. And in the end, it is deeply personal. It can't be "accurate", because no two people are the same, and no two languages map 1:1 (though the interpretation will also differ between different users of the same language); the best you can do is add translator's notes.LLM translators manage good translation because they've been fed tons of human translation work, and quite often they manage to match an original human translation and plagiarize it. They may even seem better because they seem to manage it without sufficient context, but that's only because they've found a human translation that had that context already.Or, well, technically they can also regurgitate something that makes sense only in the irrelevant original context.#NoAI #NoLLM

       Dependency cooldowns are a nice idea, but I dare say they're a short-term solution.They resemble the idea of avoiding poison by waiting for someone else to start eating first. That works, provided that someone actually eats first, and that the poison works fast. But eventually it leads to that awkward silence at the table when nobody wants to risk the first bite.Adapting dependency cooldowns means basically waiting for "someone else" to notice the problem. At some point when large enough number of projects adapts them, we're going back to square one — except with an artificial few-day delay.#security #FreeSoftware

       #Python Hypothesis package now requires #RustLang. This is a scale of reverse dependencies I can't handle. I guess this means it's the end of WD40 profiles on #Gentoo, and therefore the end of support for Alpha, ARM<v6, HPPA, M68k, i486 and some other random subsets of architectures and profiles.        And the next big blocker for #Python 3.15 in #Gentoo is time-machine. Which is obviously broken. There's a patch but it's #slop and complex, and it's sitting for 3 months already with no reply. Because obviously patching CPython internals is so much a better idea than freezegun ever were.        Zero days since 83 #Gentoo developers effectively lost push access over revoked PGP key signatures because of random #LDAP hiccup.Yes, we have error handling. And yes, we have a safety check in case error handling didn't work and LDAP returned empty list of developers. Yet apparently that's not enough either, so now we also check if the diff between old and new lists isn't too large; you know, in case ldapsearch randomly returned a subset of developers and considered it a success.

       PSA: after another major policy violation by user who clearly never cared about #Gentoo and joined only to ignore the rules, I've suspended processing access requests to GURU. We're already working on a new policy, and we'll go from there.
