a11y benefits: it's shorta11y drawbacks: it looks like the unrelated word "ally", people who haven't seen it before have no clue what it means, most people don't have a number row on their phone keyboard and therefore have to type it like "a - symbols mode - 11 - exit symbols mode - y" which defeats the whole "time saver" thing, you will be (rightly!) tarred, drawn, feathered, and quartered if you say "ay-eleventy" out loud--- PAGE BREAK ---XSRBLT benefits: it's 1337 as fuck, caps lock is cruise control for cool, you can determine what it means by sounding it out (ex-ess-ar-bee-ell-tee...? oh, acc-ess-i-bi-li-ty!), we don't have enough acronyms that sound like words (i can only think of OK, MC, and ICUP)XSRBLT drawbacks: looks like a rejected ben 10 alien (WARNING: fandom link), longer to type out, contains the acronym "BLT" and may distract people with thoughts of yumny sammich, only works if your language names the latin alphabet the same as english does and is therefore, ironically enough, less accessible to non-english speakers (not like a11y is either though)

it's kind of incredible how twitter was so unbelievably influential that it convinced millions of people that the # symbol is itself called a "hashtag". they weren't even trying to do that. it's a hash that you use to tag things. a hash tag.i think it was helped by nobody agreeing what # is even called. hash? pound? octothorpe? number sign? sharp? well the only app on my phone that uses it† says it's a hashtag‡ so that's what it is† twitter was not the only app to use the hash symbol‡ twitter did not say the symbol itself is a hashtag

for the roughly 8% of uni students still generating their essays by hand: i regret to inform you that the word grammar checker (assigned green squiggle underline at birth, transitioned to double stroke blue underline. happy pride month everyone) has wisened up to several of my standard "word count reacher" tricks. it now suggests the following """fixes""":"the aforementioned widgets" -> "the widgets""a number of gizmos" -> "many gizmos"and, worst of all, my most reliable and enduring friend: "due to the fact that" -> "because"horrifyingly enough, it's even beginning to discover and suggest the removal of redundant adjectives. it occasionally suggests replacements like "a reliable bedrock" -> "a bedrock".we can argue about the more existentially/cosmically disturbing erosion of writer's voice into a homogeneous Microsoft Approved Standard Voice, but of far more concern is this blatant attempt on our god-given right to bloviate on assignments. if the only difference in the rubric for a distinction vs a high distinction is the word "remarkably" becoming "exceptionally", you better believe i'm expanding "john (20xx) shows" into "the study by john (20xx) reveals that a group of researchers were able to demonstrate that".stay safe out there folks.

first they came for the AI slop, and i said nothing, because they were absolutely right. then they came for the human slop, and -- due to the fact that the aforementioned research paper by smith (1999) soundly demonstrated that i myself had not in fact stood up for (and in doing so defended the rights of) the large number of AI sloppers who had been come for prior by that same group that now came for me as further described in said paper -- the number of those who were prepared, willing, and motivated to stand up for me had dwindled to zero.
