@georgia most slur usage i encounter in person or have participated in has been slurs surrounding gender, sexuality, or mental ability, said by people in a demographic that "can reclaim" it, but where the actual motivation is just that it's a naughty word that's fun to say. i decided to stop doing this a while agobut fully reclaimed slurs, ones which don't feel derogatory to me at all, like "queer," i will say

@Jonny @chud-the-builder "lillian" doesn't come from "lilith." it comes from the latin "lilium," meaning a lily. the only people i've met named lilith have named themselves that because they thought the connotations were cool.

@luce-anon i've somehow looped around from this to whatever the opposite of this is. all i understand my religion to be is faith in the gracious gospel of Jesus Christ...but i do say the Hail Mary in Latin every day, and i like to sing the Angelus, and i will prostrate myself before the Roman Catholic Eucharist and i will pray in front of states of St. Francis or Mary or the Jesus with his Sacred Heart...but i consider myself to do all of this in an entirely Protestant manner

@luce-anon @kon it's worth noting that ever since the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, the Catholic Church and mainstream Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, and Reformed have all agreed on what used to be the dispute over sola fide/sola gratia/etc.

@luce-anon @kon sola fide is part of an explanation of how God effects salvation, and these Catholic and Protestant churches have agreed that we do not disagree on the essential details of this message. so what i'm saying is, Roman Catholics officially believe in sola fide as it is understood by mainstream Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, and Reformed

@luce-anon @lizzie there are programmed quakers who do things like communion or even baptism—actually there are a lot of them—but the traditional quaker argument is that, for the soul who is open to the Holy Spirit, all the outward signs of creation can be full of God's inward grace, and to one who is not like this, no ritual has any effect and Jesus did not intend to institute rote ordinances of this kind

i love secular pluralism and think it is wonderful to have societies which can neutrally accommodate religious differences, including non-belief, and i am perpetually unhappy about my province pretending to become "more secular" by instituting anti-religious policies which unsurprisingly are unevenly applied.
