@Gargron It's not so much that translated literature doesn't exist, it's that *publishers* think anglophone readers are scared of translated literature (I'm a professional translator, at the London Book Fair this week, and this subject has come up several times).But yes, machine translation is bloody awful, and it's terrible to work with as a human translator too - it doesn't "make our lives easier", you have to throw it all out and start again from scratch. Except obviously you're only being pad a fraction of your normal translation rate because "it's easier".It is not easier. It's never possible to merely edit a machine translated text and end up with something as good as a competent human translator could have produced.Another conversation I'm having this week is how translators can convey their value to publishers and agents, but now I'm wondering whether we shouldn't also be asking how readers can convey their desire for human translated literature, and lots more of it.Inevitably, translated literature is opening up a new world, new experiences, new ways of thinking and seeing, to the reader. We all need more of that to fight back against the narrow-minded control freakery of the right wing.

@EUCommission No, seriously. Take a stand on this nonsense. It's built on stolen work and hidden labour, it's burning up our already scarce resources at a terrifying rate, it's really really bad for people's brains and even if it worked (which it doesn't) it would put billions of people out of work in a really short timescale. Who's going to pay taxes then? How does society cope when you wipe out the incomes of a huge tranche of its working population and give them... nothing in return? We don't need this stuff, and we're certainly not ready for it, even IF it worked.

@chaucerburnt My bloody violin's so small I can't find it, otherwise I'd definitely be playing it. (You're absolutely right about anthropomorphisation of these systems being infuriating, however. It's literally just going "Hm, what word should go after this one?" How do people *still* not understand this?)

@EUCommission And this was the problem with the UK's membership - right from the very start the mainstream media treated Europe as a separate thing, not as something the UK was a member of. It was always "Europe says this" and "Europe does that", not "As Europeans we say this". You could see that when Brexit happened and groups like farmers and fishers who had voted Leave were suddenly astonished that they no longer got European funding. Because they'd never been European in their heads.
