       Right now, yes, I think biological systems like the incredibly complex way DNA (and other genetic code) interacts with hyper-local and other environments to produce biological stuff is beyond the reach of genAI.However, I'm sure there are hundreds or thousands of biological researchers using AI or slightly simpler machine learning algorithms to solve tough problems--these tools can sometimes spot (and other times just use, without telling us how) patterns that humans can't. I like this post and think it's accurate so far--with my painfully limited, layperson's understanding of biology--but a year ago the experts said #AI would never generate good code, and now it generates useful code in lots of areas. It won't stop getting better, and I don't think we're near any plateaus in its improvement. The main reason to oppose AI isn't because it sucks.#biology #code #resist #meme #dna

       My university system (SUNY) has mandated that all gen ed courses with quantitative or information literacy components include a bunch of stuff about #AI. The good news is that we are not mandated to cheerlead AI or teach people how to use it, but the latter is almost mandated by the language of what we have to address. We also have to have specific assignments about AI. My assignments will not leave students with a false sense that AI is benign or ethically OK. I expect some pushback, but this is one of the things I'm willing to get ugly about. Plenty of faculty have jumped on board the university/system administration's many other messages about teaching "ethical use" of #AI, integrating it into all classes to teach students how to use it "effectively" and "non-harmfully," etc. You can probably guess, from my tone, what I think of this and how many swear words my thoughts might contain.I'm not required to incorporate content about about other technologies like cryptocurrency, NFTs, crowdsourced knowledge bases, goFundMe, or (heaven forbid) open-source software. Nope, just AI. This feels like the corporate managers of #US #highered being as corporate as their sad little suit-wearing, jargon-spewing selves can possibly be. I really hope we come out of this someday understanding just how anti-labor, anti-environment, anti-peace, anti-freedom, and basically anti-human this top-down push for #genAI is.        Update: My 14-year-old daughter heard me say that I was required to have a statement about AI in my syllabus. She responded, "Can the statement be FUCKITY FUCK FUUUUUCK FUCK THIS FUCKING BULLSHIT TO FUCKING HELL AND BACK?"I think she is turning out OK. What a relief.

       @mullvadnet @rysiek Elon Musk is the most recent and most salient example in my mind of how this can work. He might as well say "my political contributions to Trump's campaign are private and not part of the missions of SpaceX or Tesla." I get that you don't agree with your co-founder's political views, and I don't have any reason to think you predicted or support them. However, it looks very much like a portion of every dollar or euro given to your company ends up funding a far-right anti-immigration movement.
