       I've started reading Resisting AI. It's not a very long book, and quite clear and readable. McQuillan links AI, that is, machine learning, to fascism, by describing fascism as palingenetic ultranationalism as an elite response to crisis. Palingentic ultranationalism is the fantasy of restoring an imaginary past national glory through purification, which is all too familiar for those of us in the US and UK, certainly. So AI systems are used to reinforce existing systems of bigotry.

       @cwebber I don't understand people claiming they can self-host an independent "AI agent". It doesn't square with how I understand they work. It doesn't square with the immense data centers being built.And while at first I'm sympathetic to his complaint about losing the open Web, he goes off the rails. You can still create web pages. It's just text. HTML tags are optional. He's fantasizing about singlehandedly competing with Microsoft or something.

       @Athena Looking at it a bit more, the argument against basing their policy on ethics is a direct rejection of Kant's categorical imperative, that you should always act as if your decisions are a model for everyone else in an analogous situation. Kant deliberately doesn't take into account whether you will influence anyone.As with any major ethical school, it's easy to find counterexamples for Kant.But that's not relevant in this case, because the Rust Foundation *is* influential, and denying responsibility fails not just as an abstract question but on practical grounds.

Most of the work we do is bullshit, most of the products we create go into landfills without ever being used, most food just rots. It's layers upon layers of waste. Some of the most important jobs are unpaid, the "second shift", which is why I mentioned cleaning up after ourselves.Most of our lives are wasted.

       @fribbledom I've thought that the difference between storytelling and reporting a series of events, is that there's implicitly a storyteller who is telling the story for a reason, which informs how the story is told.
