Dear Fedi friends,I'm really proud to share with you a video I made: "Introducing the Fediverse: a New Era of Social Media" https://news.elenarossini.com/fediverse-video/In this 4-minute video I explain what the #fediverse is to people not familiar with it, mentioning some of its great features and benefits (interoperability, no ads, no surveillance...) and I set it in contrast to the world of Big Tech social platforms. I argue that, with the rise of Big Tech oligarchs and the current political climate, there has never been a better time to join the fediverse.I hope you will enjoy this video and that you will find it useful (maybe as a tool to introduce your friends, family, colleagues, school administrators, local government officials to it).The fediverse has truly changed my life, making me a better, more empowered digital citizen. As a new, very green, very basic sysadmin, something missing from the manual vs. let’s ask a LLM mode is… the human element.Aside from ethical considerations (environmental costs, stolen training data, erosion of skills and critical thinking), I will always choose “manual mode.” Why? I love receiving tech advice from people on the Fediverse.I will forever remember that it’s @ilja who encouraged me to start self-hosting with #YunoHost.I first heard about #FreeBSD from @stefanoEarlier this week I learned about #tmux from @teapot_ben and @drfyzziksToday @antoine_ali helped me get this GoToSocial instance to federate again by restarting dnsmasq.I know if I run into issues I can just shoot a DM to my tech mentors @stereo and @janLet’s not forget the beauty of human connections 💖

They had raised a million dollars just last year! They even sponsored the AtmosphereConf last week. Then Bluesky PBC steamrolled over them and announced their own project - Attie - powered by AI... at AtmosphereConf (the event where Graze was listed as a major sponsor - you can't make this up).A developer for ATProto was horrified by this, writing:"Why would anyone fund an Atmosphere project if Bluesky, with $100 million in the bank, might ship a competing feature at any moment? Why would a founder bet their career on this ecosystem? The presentation didn't just hurt Graze. 👩🏻💻 my so-called sudo life - day 490: #KindleJailbreak edition 🆓Regarding yesterday's post on the Kindle jailbreak: it is SO WORTH it.I hope I didn't discourage anyone by saying how much I struggled with it. Well, I had a 15 YEAR OLD device and the online tutorials didn't work with it. I finally managed to install KUAL after finding a Reddit thread that gave step-by-step advice for the Kindle 4 gen.I was really bummed that highlighting didn't work for it so I bit the bullet and got my hands on the cheapest e-reader I could find yesterday: a Kindle 11 gen with ads.Mind you, I'm in the Italian countryside at the moment and it's a miracle they had it in stock at my local superstore. I would have preferred a Kobo but it is what it is.Jailbreaking a recent Kindle is child's play. I was happy to see that it was not on the latest firmware, so it was easily jailbreakable.So:jailbreaking itinstalling a HotFix to prevent OTA updatesinstalling KUALinstalling KOreaderinstalling SimpleUIremoving adsinstalling custom transparent wallpaperstransferring books to ittook a little over an hour. Easy peasy.The backlight was great at 2:30am (I was woken up by my child coughing and couldn't easily fall back asleep). Very happy that I can do highlights in KOreader and now the ultimate test is how I can transfer the highlights to my computer / Calibre.If you're on the fence, I'd say, go for it. Oh what a day!Earlier today I managed to communicate via mesh networks with my friend @stereo in Germany... some 400+ km away.It only took 6 hops... the third one in the chain was the iconic Jungfraujoch radio relay station (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungfraujoch_radio_relay_station).So exciting!I can't thank Ralf enough for his help with this...
